A passenger thrown into a windscreen when a bus braked sharply is calling for seatbelts to be fitted.

Nadine Kennedy, 17, was on a 2B double-decker travelling through Shoreham when the driver had to slam on the brakes.

She was thrown from her seat at the front of the top deck into the windscreen and was left with a head injury and concussion.

Now Miss Kennedy, of Westbourne Villas, Hove, is calling on Brighton and Hove Bus and Coach Company to fit seatbelts to all its vehicles.

She said: "There were a couple of people injured on the bus. The driver came and had a look at me and said he'd call the paramedics.

"They took me to Worthing Hospital. The head injury wasn't too bad but I suffered headaches for three or four days and my vision kept going.

"It was scary because they kept asking me what day it was and I couldn't remember. There was no blood but I had a big bruise on the side of my face.

"If I'd been wearing a seatbelt it would have still been nasty but I wouldn't have had such a bad head injury."

The accident happened in Upper Shoreham Road, Shoreham, at 2pm on Tuesday, April 18.

Miss Kennedy said: "If the same thing had happened to a pensioner or someone carrying a baby it could have been much worse."

Roger French, managing director of the bus company, said there were no plans to fit seatbelts to buses operating in town centres.

He said: "It wouldn't be practical. We have standing passengers on some of our routes so it wouldn't make sense to have passengers wearing seatbelts.

"Having said that we are taking delivery of two buses fitted with seatbelts to be used on longer journeys, but that's a different market.

"It just wouldn't work on urban routes where people are getting on and off all the time."
