A bluegrass six-piece from the Blue Ridge of Virginia, The Hackensaw Boys eschew the hillbilly pastiche popularised by the likes of Hayseed Dixie.

But with names like Baby, Pee Paw and The Kooky Eyed Fox, they're certainly an entertaining spectacle as they veer between veracious knees-ups and beautifully simple country.

With a sound described as The Ramones meets The Carter Family, the band have played from Nashville to the Netherlands, and their first Brighton gig was last summer.

"We seem to have a pretty broad spectrum of fans," says guitar and mandolin player Shiner. "We've done tours where we've played for a kindergarten class one night, old people in a retirement home the next, and then in a punk rock club. And of course we've done many, many shows on the streets."
