Skipper Chris Adams praised his side for a job well done after Sussex had the better of the first day of their Championship match against Yorkshire at Headingley.

Rana Naved took 4-86 and Mushtaq Ahmed 3-68 as Yorkshire slumped from 150-3 to 272 all out.

Sussex could not get through 18 overs of their reply before the close unscatched, losing Richard Montgomerie to England's Matthew Hoggard as they reached 37-1 at the close.

Adams said: "What we have been stressing to the bowlers is the need to bowl in partnerships in the same way that batsmen do. Rana and Mushy did that. They bounce off each other."

Yorkshire looked like fighting back during a stand of 126 in 29 overs between Darren Lehmann (64) and Anthony McGrath (80) but both fell quickly after lunch.

Adams added: "We were perhaps guilty of having a go at them with the short ball and, to their credit, they had a go back.

"I hate to say it but I love watching Lehmann bat. He's a high-quality performer.

"It's a good batting pitch so we're happy to restrict them to 272.

"If we can see off Hoggard and (Jason) Gillespie today without too many problems we've got the oppportunity to put ourselves in a strong position."

Meanwhile, former Sussex bowler Billy Taylor took career best figures of 6-32, including a maiden first-class hat-trick, as Hampshire bowled out Middlesex for just 98.

It was Taylor's first Championship appearance for ten months.
