During April 1997, English choral group I Fagiolini traveled to South Africa to take part in a cultural exchange with a Soweto-based choir, the SDASA

Chorale, as part of a British Council cultural exchange.

Although European and African music have existed side by side in South Africa for many years, it was only after the end of apartheid the two musical traditions were brought together.

The idea for the project was simple but ground-breaking: Each group sang a song from their own tradition and the other group responded with a song from their own culture.

Gradually, the song styles were brought together.

Despite the differing rhythms and tones, every culture sings about similar emotions, with themes of love, loss and celebration. The shared sentiments of the two styles created music that has a resonance across both cultures.

Following a number of concerts in South Africa and the UK, the two groups are performing their last concerts together in the UK.

Catch this unique collaboration while you can.

Starts: 7.30pm. Tickets: £22, £18, £15, £10, £6.
