Regarding Rod Mein's article about the proposed incinerator for Newhaven (The Argus, April 25), Eastbourne once had an incinerator which was a brick-built chimney like a furnace, at St Phillips Avenue on the household site.
It burned domestic waste from 1920 to 1960, when it was dismantled and, since then, we have used landfill sites. Where was the toxic waste for the incinerator in Newhaven going to end up?
The long-term health of the town is more important but we have had no comment from health ministers on these issues.
We know from the use of asbestos in council houses during the Sixties what devastating effects lack of foresight can bring.
It is the long-term effects we have to consider.
