The Levellers were slapped with a crusty ASBO years ago. Once pigeon-holed, vivid live performances and a batch of catchy singles were conveniently brushed under the carpet.

Here in the sparkling environs of the Spiegeltent, the city's most successful folk-rock act stripped down to bare acoustic business. With daylight invading through Spiegeltent windows, the band eased the crowd into the shock of a Monday night out.

The audience were there to adore and viewing problems - exacerbated by a low stage and a seated band - failed to dampen spirits.

Singer Mark Chadwick possesses one of the finest folk voices since Bob Dylan fell off his motorbike. He held the audience transfixed during new tune Song For Bloke - a touching tribute to a friend. Simon Friend has a voice like gargled gravel, perfect for The Boatman which stepped up proceedings.

As darkness fell outside, the dancefloor took on a beery veneer and Chemically Free finally got everyone moving. By the time Beautiful Day kicked-in the crowd were stomping, fists punching the air.

Righteous chaos ensued and The Levellers retained their place in Brighton folklore.
