I don't know what book Gordon Dean uses to research his film stars (Letters, May 6-7), but he misses two important things about George Sanders as far as this town is concerned - he was at school at Brighton College and he is commemorated on the front of one of our buses.

Strangely, I have just watched Sanders in Cairo (1963), a mediocre film but with a fine performance from him. Also, a few days before, my flatmate heard him as Sher Khan in Disney's The Jungle Book.

Sanders was highly intelligent but became increasingly disenchanted with his work and his life. His suicide note indicates his cynical, amused air was not merely to be found in his movie roles: "Dear World: I am leaving because I am bored. I feel I have lived long enough. I am leaving you with your worries in this sweet cesspool. Good luck."
