The doors of The Argus were thrown open to the public yesterday as part of Local Newspaper Week.

Sixty readers enjoyed a tour of the newspaper's offices and printing rooms. They were given an insight into the industry by staff including Michael Beard, The Argus group editor, and Martyn Willis, managing director of the paper's parent company Newsquest Sussex.

John Bryant, 76, of The Drive, Southwick, said: "This is first class. I have been reading The Argus for 60 years. It is nice to know what goes on behind the scenes."

Mr Beard said: "It's interesting to see most people's reaction when they come in. I don't think they realise just how much work goes into bringing them their favourite newspaper."

Mr Willis said: "It has been a privilege to welcome so many of our readers to the home of The Argus."

Mr Willis explained that Newsquest Sussex also produces the Leader series, magazines, and 100 million leaflets a year.
