A host of fund-raising events have been held in support of an appeal to help a father dying from cancer.

The Neil Cooper Appeal set up by The Argus has now raised more than £20,000 and donations continue to pour in from people touched by his plight.

Mr Cooper, 33, from Portslade, has an untreatable form of cancer affecting his lungs and kidneys. His family urgently need help to give him the chance to spend more time with his six-month-old daughter Caitlin and wife Wendy, 32.

The appeal will pay for a trial cancer treatment not available on the NHS. There is no guarantee it will work but there is a good chance it will prolong Mr Cooper's life.

Each course costs £10,000 and Mr Cooper is beginning his second this week.

He will have a scan to check his progress in the next month.

In the meantime, generous friends, work colleagues, supporters and complete strangers are doing their bit to help.

Staff from Legal and General in Hove held a raffle and various other events at their offices and raised £3,243 which was matched by the company and led to a donation of almost £6,500.

The Holmbush Centre at Shoreham donated its wishing well cash to the appeal, a total of £761.12.

The money was handed over by security guard Fred Hawkins and Holmbush Centre manager George Watkins.

A fund-raising night at Creation nightclub in Brighton was organised by Richard Michalec and raised more than £150 with possibly more to come.

Legal and General staff have also organised a fund-raising seven-a-side football match at Haywards Heath Football Club tomorrow from about 10am.

All are welcome and will be asked to make a donation at the entrance. Each of the ten teams taking part has paid £100 so a minimum of £1,000 is already guaranteed.

Appeal co-ordinator Elsa Gillio said: "We have been overwhelmed by all the support. Everyone has been rallying around and we are delighted with the response there has been.

"It is clear that Neil's story has struck a chord with many and we hope people will continue to help this special family."

Cheques made payable to The Argus can be sent to: The Neil Cooper Appeal, Argus House, Crowhurst Road, Brighton, BN1 8AR.

You can also donate by credit card.
