In a letter last November, I implied appointing Polly Toynbee as "chair" of Brighton Festival would lead to more ultra-trendy events and left-wing "happenings".

However, I have to agree with The Argus Comment and admit this year's festival was one of the best. I enjoyed three interesting events. Nothing in the past ten festivals had appealed to me.

While there is still no traditional theatre and there are too many puppets and circus-type acts for my liking, Nick Dodds, the chief executive, has every right to be proud of this year's festival programme and its success.
