Albion manager Mark McGhee today challenged Alex Frutos to celebrate cementing his future with the club by finding the back of the net more frequently.

McGhee wants the French left winger to add goals to his game in his second season with the Seagulls since moving from Metz.

Frutos, 24, has just signed a new two-year contract, replacing a deal which had only a year left to run and would have allowed him to leave for nothing following Albion's relegation from the Championship.

Frutos found the net three times last season - all at home - and McGhee believes that is a statistic he can improve in League One.

"I'd like to see him score a few more goals," McGhee said. "That will be the challenge I'll be putting to him. He's got to score more, because he can finish.

"The contract is terrific news for us. He's a good type, a good lad, and I think Alex has got even more to come. He'll be a big player for us this year."

The new deal for Frutos has averted the genuine danger of Albion losing him as well as fellow French winger Seb Carole. He exploited the same relegation escape clause to join Leeds on a free transfer.

"It's a shame we couldn't keep him as well," McGhee said. "I think Seb would have torn this league apart."

Frutos will still have plenty of Gallic company in Albion's opening pre-season friendly at Worthing tomorrow (3pm).

Trialists Zoumana Bagayoko, Stephane Biakolo, Jaques Williams and Leonard Mendy are all expected to feature along with Carole's potential replacement, Martin Brittain from Newcastle.

Leftback Bagayoko, from Paris St Germain, has caught the eye in training, while 24-year-old Le Havre striker Biakolo has international experience with Cameroon.

He was called into their squad by former Albion managerial target Winfried Schaefer after the 2002 World Cup.

Central midfielder Williams, like Le Havre and Crawley centre half Mendy, has experienced Conference football with Scarborough. The 25-year-old, born in Liverpool but raised in France, was previously with Birmingham.

Albion's annual curtain-raiser against Worthing also gives fans a first look at ex-Braintree striker Alex Revell, 23 today, the only new signing to date.

Adam Hinshelwood is unlikely to be risked due to a sore knee, unrelated to the knee injury which sidelined him for most of last season.
