Claire Smithson insists she is 95 per cent certain of turning down the chance to compete at the European Championships.

Smithson was named in the Great Britain squad for the competition in Gothenburg next month after winning the AAAs discus title at the weekend.

The 22-year-old from Portslade had admitted she was considering snubbing the British selectors before the squad was announced and the fact she has been given the nod has not changed her mind.

Smithson does not receive a penny in financial support after being dropped from Lottery funding last October and claims she cannot afford to miss out on a week's wages to travel to Sweden as she attempts to pay off her debts.

The Brighton and Hove City athlete said: "I am going to wait to speak to my coach at the weekend before making a definite decision but I am 95 per cent sure I will not go.

"When the selectors called to let me know I was in the squad I think they expected me to be over the moon but I wasn't. They obviously didn't think I had the potential when they cut my funding so I don't have a lot of respect for them.

"Maybe it will help prove my point that they shouldn't have cut my funding but I am not going to go begging for it back."

As expected, Tim Bayley was not included in the first wave of athletes to be named in the squad despite his third place finish in the 800m at Manchester.

The 24-year-old from Brighton now faces an anxious wait until the final squad is announced next Friday to see whether he will be chosen for the third available spot at the distance behind the two who beat him on Sunday - Sam Ellis and Michael Rimmer.

Dwain Chambers need only prove his fitness to guarantee selection for next month's European Championships.

Chambers, Great Britain's fastest 100m sprinter this season, was a notable omission from the Norwich Union side announced for the event in Gothenburg after a quad injury ruled him out of the final at the trials on Saturday.

However, UK Athletics performance director Dave Collins later confirmed Chambers, second fastest in Europe over 100m, would be included in the final wave of team selections on July 28, subject to his fitness being confirmed by UKA's doctor Bruce Hamilton.
