A crumbling chapel could be knocked down to make way for 53 apartments and a new church.

Plans have been drawn up to knock down Ebenezer Baptist Chapel at Richmond Parade, Brighton, and construct a six-storey building.

The chapel is described as "outdated" and in "an advanced state of disrepair".

The ground floor of the new building would house a church with community rooms and above and around it would be three two-bedroom wheelchair flats, 23 one-bedroom flats, 23 two-bedroom flats and four three-bedroom flats. There would also be car parking in the basement.

The proposals are a partnership between Grace Baptist Churches and Hyde Housing Association, who would fund the project and lease the apartments. The existing chapel was built in 1966. There has been a Baptist chapel on Richmond Parade since 1725.

David Whitmarsh, of Grace Baptist Churches, said: "We need to do something radical but the church doesn't have the money to do it, so this partnership seemed the ideal way to go."
