A leisure centre is open for business after a chemical leak alert.

Crowds of people were evacuated from the King Alfred centre in Hove yesterday morning after a potentially dangerous “chemical incident”.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service was alerted by centre staff following reports of a spillage of a swimming pool chemical in one of the machinery rooms.

Early morning swimmers and gym-goers were asked to leave the premises in the Kingsway as the building was sealed off.

Four fire engines, a technical rescue unit and a decontamination team were at the centre for four hours.

Sussex Police were called out to help with the crowds while firefighters dealt with the leak.

Teams gave the all clear at about 12.30pm after the building was thoroughly ventilated and the centre, which is owned by Brighton and Hove City Council, reopened at 2pm.
