Since time immemorial we have all wanted what we haven't got.

Those of us with stumpy legs have pined after a pair of long, slender pins, women with poker-straight hair have longed for a head of cherubic curls and those of us with poached eggs for breasts have enviously eyed the fuller chests of our more well-endowed friends.

Flat-chested females, whose lifeless AA cup saps even the Wonderbra of its wonder, have long-tried to perk up what little Mother Nature gave them.

From the millions of women who bought into the Sixties US hit the Mark Eden Bust developer a pink clam shell with a heavy-duty spring you squeezed between both hands, which claimed it could "subtly transform" a woman's outlines to the teenage girls who chanted the flat-chested woman's mantra "I must, I must, I must improve my bust" while frantically flapping their arms, there sadly have been few eye-opening results.

But now there is a new product on the bust-boosting block BreastGro, a natural dietary supplement from the Netherlands which manufacturers Liberty Healthcare claim can create "fuller, firmer breasts" and boost your assets by up to two cup sizes.

According to manufacturers, pop up to five of the herbal tablets a day for eight weeks and you'll notice a difference. Keep popping for six to eight months and you'll be investing in a bigger bra.

The pills, which seem to contain the same ingredients as a multigrain loaf buckwheat, black oats, malt, barley, rye and wheat also contain hops, which are rich in phytoestrogens.

These naturally occurring plant molecules which have a weak oestrogen- like effect and are used by some women as an alternative to HRT are meant to mimic the effects of puberty on the breasts by boosting glandular tissue and making your bust bigger.

According to the BreastGro website, some women have reported not only a bigger bosom but clearer skin and stronger hair while taking the tablets.

But Brighton GP Dr David Delvin remains sceptical about the wonders of BreastGro: "Over the past 30 years we've seen countless products come and go and none of them ever came to anything.

This may be different but I doubt it. The main thing is, as far as I'm aware, the product looks safe.

"Unfortunately, short of surgery there are no guaranteed ways to increase your bust size."

BreastGro is available from selected branches of Holland & Barrett, price £49.95 for one month's supply.
