A seagulls fan was given the perfect birthday gift thanks to the generosity of Argus readers.

Ken Baverstock, who broke a vertebrae in his neck in a cycling accident last year, was set to miss out on a visit to Brighton and Hove Albion’s new Falmer Stadium because he didn’t have any specialised transport to get him there.

But now Mr Baverstock’s birthday wishes have been answered as the family have been inundated with generous offers of help after we asked for help.

Saltdean South Coast and Premier Taxis were able to step in at the last minute to help Mr Baverstock make it to the ground in time.

Mr Baverstock, a life-long member of the Albion supporters club, was paralysed from the neck down after falling from his bike in Lincoln Avenue, Peacehaven in September.

He has since recovered some movement in his arms although he is still confined to a wheelchair.

Mr Baverstock’s daughter Stacy Collier, 27, said: “My dad’s absolutely ecstatic.

“We had about 15 calls from people and companies wanting to help.

“It makes me feel that people actually care out there and want to help."
