A man was stabbed after a row in a bakery.

The 28-year-old was taken to hospital with several knife wounds after an argument in Greggs in Boundary Road, Portslade.

The shop’s 32-year-old manager was arrested after the attack.

The shop had to be deep-cleaned overnight to make sure blood shed in the violence did not contaminate any food.

A pregnant 22-year-old manager had called into the outlet shortly before 5pm on Tuesday.

She is believed by police to have got into an argument with the 32-year-old, who was also working as a manager.

Her 28-year-old friend came into the shop while the row was going on.

Sussex Police said the woman was punched in the stomach.

Her friend was stabbed twice in the stomach and also in the leg with a knife belonging to the business.

He was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, where his injuries were described as serious but not life-threatening, and was later discharged.

The woman was also taken to hospital as a precaution but is not believed to have been seriously hurt.

Sussex Police confirmed a 32-year-old man was arrested in Western Road on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and actual bodily harm.

He was held overnight and questioned before being released on bail until the end of next month.

Detectives confirmed a knife believed to be used for cutting cakes was recovered from the scene.

Greggs said the trouble took place at closing time so trading was not affected and there was no question of the public being put at risk.

There was no food in the shop at the time and it opened as usual yesterday morning.

A spokesman said: “This matter is under police investigation and it would not therefore be appropriate to speculate on the events leading to the incident.”
