Nurseries in East Sussex have been issued advice by the local council in an attempt to improve the nutrition of children under five in their care.
East Sussex County Council's trading standards issued the guidance to eight nurseries in total, to make up for the current lack of information about nutrition in young children.
The eight nurseries volunteered to take part in a nationwide study and are now working with trading standards and dieticians to ensure their menus and portion sizes are appropriate for that age group.
The main problems that were found included focusing healthy eating on adult requirements, and children getting too much salt and sugar and not enough dairy and starchy carbohydrates.
Brian Johnson, head of trading standards, said: "It is so important that children get the right nutrition.
"The work of trading standards will help nurseries to make informed choices in order to help give children the best possible start in life."
