I wish to inform your readers that The Old Cells Police Museum opened last Saturday for the summer season.

We invite visitors to come and see the various police exhibits we now have on show. Our latest acquisition is a Police pillar. These used to contain a telephone whereby the public could be linked to the Communications Room and get instant help.

Unlike the old police boxes (now more commonly seen as “The Tardis”), these pillars had to be used while standing by the side of them.

Come along and learn about the murder of the Chief Constable in 1844, the Mods and Rockers of May 1964 and many other tales of murder and intrigue.

Visit the old cells and see the difference between the male and female cells. The Old Cells museum is situated on the site of Brighton’s old main police station which served the town for more than 100 years in the basement of the Town Hall.

Guided tours take place on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays commencing at 10.30am from now right through until the end of October. The tours are free but donations are gratefully accepted as these are the only means of income and support the museum.

To book a place on one of the tours, please contact Brighton Town Hall on 01273 291052. These tours are limited in numbers, so book early. You can book a private tour for a group of friends or club members at a cost of £2 per head.

Tours last for a little over an hour and are not suitable for anyone with severe walking difficulties or in need of a wheelchair. This is one of the best tours running currently in Brighton.
