The cloud of volcanic ash which has come over from Iceland is continuing to cover much of the UK.

Following a review of the latest Met Office information, NATS the National Air Traffic Service, has advised that the restrictions will remain in place in UK controlled airspace until 7am tomorrow (Saturday) at the earliest.

A spokesman said: "We have had to accept the reality that on a temporary basis, we are no longer able to operate our two helicopters. Our crews have already transferred to ground vehicles so that we can continue to provide our life-saving service. "This has been a difficult decision but we would like to reassure the public that we are reviewing the situation constantly and our helicopters will be back in the skies the minute we are given the all clear."
