There were some extremely prejudiced online comments on The Argus website in relation to the legitimate and peaceful protest action about BP’s decision to extract oil from Canadian tar sands (The Argus, April 12).
Actually, those taking part were people from all walks of life including students, pensioners, self-employed and working persons.
In the light of dwindling conventional oil reserves oil companies are now turning more and more to “unconventional”’ oil reserves such as tarry deposits in various locations worldwide in a desperate bid to chase maximum profits, regardless of the devastating consequences for nature and humans.
Anyone concerned with the survival of future generations would do well to remember an old Cree proverb: “Only when the last tree has died and the last river been poisoned and the last fish been caught will we realise we cannot eat money.”
Or drink oil.
