Thieves and con artists are stealing charity donations.

Bogus officials have been calling at homes asking for clothes and other items, claiming they are for the British Heart Foundation.

Others have simply made off with collection bags left on people’s doorsteps.

The most recent reports have come from the Hailsham area.

Lyn Boagey, a spokeswoman for the charity, said: “There have been a number of reports of bogus collectors operating in the East Sussex area either asking householders to donate clothing and textiles or taking stock bags which have been left out for collection.

“These collectors are working for commercial gain, with none of the proceeds going to charity.

“Household appeals are a vital source of income for our BHF shops. Stealing bags that have been left out for our charity is akin to robbing people with heart conditions of a better quality of life.”

Real collectors carry identification and use vans with the BHF logo.

Bogus callers are traditionally more of a problem at Christmas time. The visits can also be linked to distraction burglaries.

People who are suspicious about cold callers are advised to contact police.

Donors can contact their local shops to check if there is a real collection taking place, or to take their donations directly to the shops.
