During 1939 Brighton saw the last of its trams, which had been running since 1901, with some routes taken over by trolleybuses.

In 1940 the trams were being taken apart for scrap in the depot while M Freeman & Co Ltd of William Street were contracted to take up the tram tracks. They were authorised by the military to supply metal required for the war effort.

No traffic is seen passing workers outside the offices of Thomas J Wiley at 6 Old Steine above.
