On the morning of Saturday April 24, the Shoreham and Southwick Rotary Club ran their annual Stroke Awareness clinic on behalf of the Stroke Awareness Association, at the Holmbush Centre.

It is a fact that 40% of the 150,000 strokes suffered by people in the UK each year could be prevented by controlling raised blood pressure, which is the single biggest risk factor and in most cases not difficult to maintain.

Three nurses and myself took blood pressure readings and offered advice. With many members of our local Rotary club encouraging shoppers to take advantage of this free service, 148 people had their blood pressure checked.

The 148 was made up of 93 ladies and 55 gentlemen.

Of the ladies, 24 were advised to get a further check from their GP – three were considered “semi urgent” and one “urgent”.

Of the men 18 were advised to have further checks, of whom four were considered to be “semi-urgent”.

I thought the morning’s work was very worthwhile and would recommend anyone who has not had their blood pressure checked for a long time, should attend their local practice.

It is free, painless, and could save your life.
