I have already recorded my choice in the General Election by way of a postal vote. I voted for the Labour Party and, while respecting other electors’ views, permit me to say why.

As a company director, I know how our company has thrived and expanded since Labour came to power in 1997. Yes, we have experienced some tough times but year on year our turnover has increased even though we are in a highly competitive business.

As much as our company will not like having to pay increased National Insurance contributions, I believe it to be the fairest way to help the country’s economic recovery.

I do not believe it will cost jobs. I recall how opponents said the minimum wage would cost jobs. It didn’t.

I am also a pensioner and I can see how pensioners have never had it so good provided they claim everything they are entitled to.

Not enjoying the best of health, I am truly thankful for the wonderful and much improved benefits of our National Health Service.

To keep tabs on what the different political parties were saying throughout the campaign, I have read what I believe to be the two most popular national daily newspapers. One supports Labour while the other, which formerly supported Labour, now supports the Tories. The differences in reporting the same issues has been unbelievable. It is often said: “Never believe all that you read in the newspapers.” How true this is. I find the fact of electors actually being influenced by the media is quite frightening.

This brings me to the purpose of this letter: I call on everyone who is registered to vote in the election to ignore the propaganda, the polls, and what the media is throwing at them. Instead, stand back and take a good look at life as it affects your own family. Having been honest and realistic, you should then vote accordingly. I think we all accept it is inevitable some tough times are ahead. The result of this election will dictate our future prospects possibly for the next five years. It is vital that everyone gets out to vote. Failing to do so could be disastrous for Britain.
