With all the polls pointing to a hung parliament, isn’t it time the process of appointing a Prime Minister is brought up to date and out into the open?
According to our creaking constitution, if the politicians can’t sort it out among themselves the Queen must decide who forms the next government. However, Buckingham Palace is desperate to avoid a situation where the Queen – unelected and unaccountable – is drawn into political controversy. So we’re left with shadowy deals and secret memos.
If the Queen is unable do the job we reward her handsomely for, she is constitutionally pointless and should be removed from the political process. That’s why I’m backing Republic’s campaign for a new constitution with an elected head of state. Find out more at www.republic.org.uk
