Brighton and Hove Albion will be represented at this year’s World Cup.

Sadly it won’t be Glenn Murray representing the club but a large statue in the shape of a gun that has been designed by Albion manager Gus Poyet.

It will be displayed outside one of the World Cup venues in South Africa.

The Seagulls are the only club outside the Premiership to be selected to be involved with the 32 designs, each representing one of the competing countries at this summer’s tournament.

The design competition has been created by international charity Knot Violence, an international charity promoting non-violence.

The design of the charity’s symbol of a 45-caliber revolver with a twisted barrel, first produced by Swedish sculptor Carl Frederick Reutersward to mark the spot where John Lennon was murdered in New York by Mark Chapman in 1980, was customised by Poyet to feature the colours of his native Uruguay, for whom he won 26 international caps during his career.

Poyet said: “I’m thrilled to have been asked to represent my country and support this worthy campaign.”

Poyet’s design was chosen as one of the top five during the opening night of the campaign last month and will now tour some of the country’s leading football grounds before heading to South Africa.

The one metre tall fibreglass resin guns, which have been built by Art Republic, will be on show at Wembley Stadium before the England versus Mexico friendly on May 24 before being flown to South Africa on June 7 in time for the World Cup kick-off on June 11.
