A model of the Bluebird 1928 car driven by motoring legend Sir Malcolm Campbell during his land speed record is to be offered for sale, auctioneers Bonhams have announced.

The brass silver-plated model, which is 46cm long and nine-and-a-half cm high is expected to fetch between £30,000 and £35,000 when it goes under the hammer.

The lot will be among automobilia to be auctioned as part of the Goodwood Festival of Speed sale on July 2.

The model represents the 950hp Napier engine Campbell drove to achieve the land speed record of 206.96mph at Daytona Beach in February 1928.

It was originally donated by Sir Malcolm's son Donald Campbell to their old school, St Peter's in Seaford.

The model is engraved with the words: "The Bluebird 1928, Presented to St Peter's School by Donald Campbell, In memory of his father Sir Malcolm Campbell MBE."

Sir Malcolm broke the world land speed record on nine occasions between 1924 and 1935 and was the first man to exceed 300mph on land in 1935.

He went on to break four water speed records, his highest speed on water was 141.74mph in 1939 in a Bluebird K4 on Coniston Water in the Lake District.

Toby Wilson, head of automobilia at Bonhams, said: "The last model of a Bluebird owned by the Campbell family and offered for sale fetched in excess of £70,000. They rarely come up and that was a good ten years ago."

He added he expected there to be a significant amount of interest from land speed record enthusiasts.

Mr Wilson said: "Campbell father and son were among the great motor racers with their pioneering spirit, get go and thoroughly British attitude.

"They have an iconic status and with that comes kudos and a price.”
