It is ridiculous of the French-owned Newhaven Port and Properties (NPP) to threaten to move the Dieppe ferry service to another port over the row about West Beach (The Argus, April 29).

Where do they think they could move it to? The current service takes three hours from Newhaven. The nearest viable port to the east is Dover, which is already overloaded with ferries to Calais. The trip to Dieppe from there would take up to five hours.

To the west there is only Shoreham before the Solent ports. Shoreham is not a viable port for a ferry link with poor road and communication links. Taking a Dieppe service to the Solent ports is clearly ridiculous.

No, NPP has only two options: either to stay in Newhaven and make the West Beach safely accessible to the public, or to stop all ferry services to Dieppe.

I wonder if they have discussed that option with the good people of Dieppe?
