I totally agree with former headteacher Dr Stuart Newton on the wearing of school uniform and the enforcement of the new rules at Longhill High School in Brighton by headteacher Haydn Stride (The Argus, April 30).
The wearing of school uniform does set the standard for the school and makes the pupils aware they are at school to work, study and do something worthwhile.
They are not attending school for leisure purposes. I support the sending home of pupils who do not arrive at school wearing the required uniform for whatever reason. This was always the case when I was at school. Both pupils and parents accepted this and it was rare that a pupil had to be sent home.
Many places of work now have a corporate uniform, which has to be worn at all times while at work, so it is right that Mr Stride insists on this in the school, preparing his pupils for work when they finish their education.
