As part of my research into my family’s history, my uncle and I travelled to Brighton and undertook a thoroughly enjoyable trip into the past.
Both sides of our family came from the Hanover district of Brighton, these being the Steedmans and the Allens and the Attrells and the Marshalls.
I would think most Hanoverians would remember Mr Woods’s confectionery and tobacca shop on the corner of Bonchurch Road and WG Stephens the coal merchant.
My grandfather organised the street party for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth there in 1953. Hanover is a thoroughly interesting area in what is a unique city and those fortunate enough to live there have done a great job in looking after it.
