Congratulations to Roy Hilliard (Letters, May 3) on his response to John Stanaway’s notions regarding renaming Brighton Station. The issue of through train services between the East and West Coast lines is recurrent with Mr Stanaway, and it seems he just does not understand the problems which the operation of such a service presents.

Basically, this is that there is only one platform at Brighton Station with access to both the East and West Coast lines. This means that through East/West services have no flexibility to absorb any delays which in the real world inevitably arise with an intensive train service. In other words, such a train service cannot achieve an acceptable level of reliability.
