Fishing was still big business in Brighton a century ago as this 1906 postcard shows. But the industry declined and in 1960 the seafront fish market was closed amid widespread regret.
It has since been restored and there are flourishing businesses connected to the fishing museum which opens daily.
A mackerel fayre at the fishing quarter will be opened on Sunday, May 16 at 12.30pm by the Lord Lieutenant, Peter Field, and the new Mayor, Coun Geoff Wells.
Father Robert Fayers, parish priest at St Paul’s and St Michael’s, will then bless the news and the mackerel.
