The city's decision-making body has undergone a shake-up.

Brighton and Hove City Council’s cabinet of ten leading councillors has had three changes prompted by one quitting his post.

Councillor Ted Kemble has stood down from his role as cabinet member for major projects to concentrate on his other job as the chair of the East Sussex Fire Authority.

He said: “Being the chair of the fire authority was taking up an ever increasing amount of time.

“It was taking up a bigger portion of time so I sat down with the leader of the council and said while I was happy with my portfolio I felt I couldn't give it the time it needed.

“It was a very challenging role given the current financial situation the country finds itself in and an enjoyable one.”

New to the cabinet is Councillor Trevor Alford, who takes on the role of member for central services vacated by Coun Ayas Fallon-Khan.

Coun Fallon-Khan takes over from Coun Kemble as member for enterprise, employment and major projects but steps down as deputy council leader.

Former council leader Brian Oxley becomes a deputy leader (non-executive) while Dee Simson remains in her role as deputy leader and member for community affairs, inclusion and internal relations.

Council leader Mary Mears said Coun Fallon-Khan was the natural choice to take over Coun Kemble's portfolio as the central services role he previously held had a lot of crossover with his new role.

She said: “The move over was very easy because a lot of it is very very similar. Major projects is a massive portfolio and so he has stood down from deputy leader to concentrate on that.”

She added: “We discussed how we were going to move it around and make it more effective and I am really excited. It's a fantastic team who will do really well.”
