Two Brighton-based football fans are hoping to get everyone singing along to a World Cup 2010 song that they’ve written for a Youtube competition in the hopes of winning the £1,000 prize for charity.

Calling themselves ‘The Marzipan Soldiers’, friends Tim Lumgair, 25 and Ben Tucker, 22, from Franklin Road, Brighton decided to collaborate on their own song, “Football is our History” after the Football Association (FA) announced there would be no official England World Cup song this year. They discovered the online competition called ‘World Cup Song 2010’ where other disappointed fans had recorded and posted videos of their anthems.

The prize money will go to the video with the most views on Youtube before the World cup Final kicks off on 11th July. Mr Lumgair said: “Most of the other videos had been up for over a year, yet in about 2 days we got enough views to take us from 200th position to 70th”.

The song is now in the top 50 entries, and should it win, the prize money will be given to the Bevern View, which is a care home in Barcombe, Sussex for young adults with profound learning disabilities. The home is currently embarking on a costly project to build a hydrotherapy pool onsite and the money will help towards that.

Mr Lumgair, who is a care worker at the home, said: “as well as being fun to watch and helping a good cause we hope the song will get people into the world cup spirit and hype us all up for English success”.

The video features footage from all over Brighton, from Lewes Road to Stanmer Park. Mr Tucker, a student, said: “It was very important that we rooted the video in Brighton as we both very much love Brighton as a city”.

The generous pair are also giving all proceeds from downloads to Bevern View.
