Two men have been charged with the attempted robbery of a jewellers.

Three men were arrested by police within 45 minutes of a failed robbery at at Austin's Jewellers in North Street, Chichester, yesterday morning.

Three men were seen trying to smash into the jewellers with a nail gun and mallet, butthe security smoke alarm went off and they fled.

Following a police pursuit a van was stopped by road policing units in Roman Way, Billingshurst, within 45 minutes, and three arrests were made.

As he left the van one of the men collided with a police car coming to a stop behind it and was taken to the Royal Surrey County Hospital at Guildford by Surrey Air Ambulance.

Miles O'Hanlon, 24, of Rutland Close, Redhill, and Stephen Dovey, 30, of Finsbury Close, Crawley, are due to appear at Chichester Magistrates' Court today.

A 22-year-old man, also arrested, remains in a stable condition at Royal Surrey County Hospital, Guildford. He is thought to be suffering from a fractured vertebrae and the injuries are not life-threatening.
