A man who was arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman was found dead in her home has been released on police bail.

Sussex Police said Lorraine Head, 46, was found with a head injury at the bottom of stairs at the cottage in Rogate, near Midhurst.

A 57-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder has been released on bail until July 7.

Police were called to the cottage behind the White Horse public house, in East Street, at about 9.30pm on Friday.

The tight knit community of Rogate was shocked at Miss Head's death.

She was known as George or Georgia and was described by residents as “a real village character”.

Reverend Edward Doyle, of St Bartholomew's Church, said: “We are all very, very sad to lose her, she was a much-loved person in the community.

“She was like a part of the village's foundation, she always got involved with things in the village.”
