Councillor Mary Mears seems to live in a very different city from the majority of Brighton and Hove’s residents.

In her recent correspondence on the matter of the new council executive director posts (Letters, June 17) she ends by saying: “Our plan is a blueprint for a financially secure and robust future; one that responds to the needs of the city and delivers improved services within budget.”

What distorted logic is Coun Mears applying in defending spending on these posts at a time when every pound counts? The people of Brighton and Hove don’t want expensive luxuries like transformational directors. They don’t want to see good money wasted on bad ideas at a time when vital services face brutal cuts.

Brighton and Hove’s residents want a city council that listens to them. Coun Mears and her colleagues would do well to remember that or they may get a very nasty shock next year.
