Tony Hadley is the voice of Spandau Ballet and a solo vocalist.

Born in Islington 50 years ago, Hadley hit the big time as Spandau vied for the top branch of the New Romantic tree with Duran Duran. Acrimony followed the group’s split in 1989, but the band let bygones be bygones last year and got together for a reunion.

Tony will be appearing as a solo artist at the ’80s Summer Party at Borde Hill Gardens tonight, along with ABC, Rick Astley, Belinda Carlisle and Go West. For tickets call 01603 660444.

Is there a performer that made you think “I want to do that?”

I was definitely influenced firstly by Frank Sinatra and then Freddie Mercury and Daryl Hall.

Do you remember the first record you bought – what was it, and where did you buy it?

Double Barrel by Dave and Ansel Collins. I think I bought it in Chapel Market, Islington, when there used to be independent record shops. Still a killer record.

Tell us about any guilty pleasures lurking in your CD or film collections – something you know is a bit naff but you can’t help yourself.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang – the best film ever made! CD wise I suppose I should own up to lots of dodgy Christmas compilations.

Do you have a favourite film?

Goodfellas – the best American gangster film ever made, and Gangster No 1, the best British one.

Is there a TV programme couldn’t you live without?

The News At Ten on BBC One.

I’m a complete news addict.

Do you have a favourite album?

There are too many to mention, but I would have to include Ziggy Stardust by David Bowie, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road by Elton John, Night At The Opera by Queen, Sunburst Finish by Be-Bop Deluxe and Hot Fuss by The Killers.

Is there a song or individual piece of music you always come back to?

Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol or Human by The Killers are my favourites at the moment and remind me of a recent special occasion.

What are you reading at the moment?

A Brief History Of The Crusades by Geoffrey Hindley. I love history.

And is there a favourite book?

Stig Of The Dump by Clive King – it reminds me of my childhood.

Is there a live music or theatre experience that stays in your memory?

Personally, Spandau Ballet (the second time around) at the O2 Arena in 2009 and Live Aid 1985, of course. Looking at other artists, I saw Take That’s Circus last year which was phenomenal.

What can people expect from the show at Borde Hill?

Not to be bored! No seriously, there’s a great line-up of fabulous artists, backed by some of the best musicians in the country. All the hits, lots of fun and hopefully a sunny day. I just want everyone to leave with a smile on their face – that’s what it’s all about.
