This is “little angel” Keira Madden, whose body was found by police only 30 minutes after her mother died in a horrific plunge from a clifftop.

Officers discovered four-year-old Keira at 2.30pm on Saturday in an upstairs bedroom of the family’s £450,000 detached house in Roundle Avenue, Felpham, Bognor.

Keira’s mother Cathy, 40, had earlier fallen about 200ft from the Seven Sisters cliff, near Birling Gap.

Members of the Beachy Head chaplaincy team, set up to dissuade people from committing suicide at the beauty spot, had tried in vain to talk Mrs Madden away from the edge.

Police said Mrs Madden gave the chaplains a false name and address.

But officers traced the correct details from her car, abandoned at Birling Gap, and alerted colleagues in Bognor who forced their way into the house.

Keira’s father Steven Madden was estranged from the family and divorce proceedings had started about two years ago.

The freelance computer programmer moved to Germany for work but returned to England to see Keira every three weeks.

Disturbance

Mrs Madden, who married Steven seven years ago, was described as a full-time mother.

A neighbour said there was an incident several months ago when Mrs Madden was seen throwing clothes and other belongings on to the lawnduring a domestic disturbance.

Yesterday family and friends laid tributes, cuddly toys and flowers outside the property.

One bouquet laid by Keira’s godparents said: “A little sweetie who will always be remembered.”

Keira’s godmother, who did not want to be named, said: “I just want everybody to know that they were both really lovely people.

“We saw Cathy just a couple of weeks ago and she seemed fine.”

Another message laid at the scene said: “Keira, gone too soon.

Rest in peace little angel.

Love Kirsten, Gay, Andrew and your little mate Trixie.”

A tribute written in a child’s handwriting said: “Dear Keira we are going to miss playing with you.

Lots of love from your mates Rosie and Annie.”

Police said they were treating Keira’s death as unexplained but were not looking for anybody else.

Devastated

A post-mortem examination on Keira yesterday proved inconclusive.

Further tests will be carried out.

Detective Chief Inspector Nick Sloan said: “The father is devastated by what has happened.

“We are still investigating the circumstances that led up to the death of Keira Madden and her mother, Cathy Madden, on Saturday.

“This appears to be a tragic series of events.

“Our thoughts are with the family members at this very difficult time, who are being supported by police family liaison officers.

“House-to-house inquiries are being conducted to establish the circumstances leading up to Keira’s death.”

DCI Sloan said it was a difficult inquiry and that staff most affected by the incident had been offered counselling.

A neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: “I used to hear the little girl playing in the garden.

She used to jump up and down on the trampoline.

She would often have two or three friends round to play.

She sounded like a normal, happy child.”

Another neighbour said: “I used to see the mother and the girl in the street, and they seemed close.

“I remember when it was snowing at the start of the year and they were out playing in the snow together and having fun.”
