Under the umbrella of the ten-day Arundel Festival, the Zimmer Stewart Gallery presents work by two very different artists.

Well known for her abstract Sussex beach and South Downs landscapes, gallery director James Stewart describes Barbara MacFarlane’s work as “better described as paintings from landscape rather than paintings of landscape. The place is important but it is perhaps not the true subject of her paintings which as she has said are ‘about shape, colour and balance’. This description might give the impression that her work is introspective or at the very least self-referential. But the inspiration for the shapes and colours is the landscape and, in the sense that these paintings celebrate what is seen in the world, they can certainly be described as landscapes.”

The themes on show in this exhibition include the rugged red landscapes of Provence and water. Elsewhere, the gallery is displaying the sculptures of Northbrook College Fine Art graduate Stuart Slade, whose work examines the human condition and how this relates to a dependence on machines and technology.

Combining the fun and fantastic, Slade’s sculptures often have a darkly surreal edge and have been noted for displaying a strong sci-fi aesthetic. As well as the futuristic pieces that stand in the gallery, Slade has created a site-specific piece, Ladder, which can be seen on the front of the building.
