A city centre gym was closed by a chemical leak yesterday.

Staff arrived at LA Fitness in Spring Gardens, Brighton, to find a chlorine alarm had been activated.

Police closed surrounding streets as a precaution as a chemical incident expert was called to the scene.

Two East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (ESFRS) crews from Brighton and Hove attended while the cause was investigated.

An ambulance was also on standby but there were no reports of any injuries.

The alarm activated in the pool and spa area of the gym which recently underwent a £500,000 refit.

Staff from the Environment Agency were last night monitoring nearby drains to ensure chlorine had not got into the waterccourse.

A spokesman for ESFRS said: “A call was received at exactly 9am that an alarm was sounding in the building.

“A specialist hazardous materials officer attended and the road was closed as a precaution.

“There are no reports of any casualties.”
