Businessman Graham Fuller wanted to relive his younger years on his 50th birthday – so he built a replica of his favourite 1970s nightclub.

Graham refurbished a barn at his home to resemble the interior of the now demolished Carioca in Eriswell Road, Worthing.

He said it wasn't easy because many former clubbers, who often arrived after a tour of the pubs, couldn't remember what the inside looked like, apart from its red and black décor.

But the 200 revellers who turned up at Saturday's party said it was like stepping back 30 years.

Graham decided to do up the barn at his Tortington home, near Arundel, to mark the 50th birthdays of himself and his friend Mike Tucker.

They first started going to the Carioca in the late 1970s and later worked behind the bar.

Graham, who also helped organise parties at the club, said: “There was nowhere else to go in those days.” He added: “Nobody had any photos of the inside so it's all been done from our memories.”

Features included the famous raised stage with red tinsel backdrop, red carpet on the floor and red carpet lagging the bar, a pine back bar, two brick pillars against which inebriated clubbers used to slump, DJ booth, and raised seating cubicles.

There was also a pinball machine, 1980s cigarette vending machine, and numerous historic posters. What are your memories of the Carioca? Tell us below.
