Rail bosses hope a new fleet of 12-carriage trains will be the solution to overcrowding on one of Sussex’s busiest lines.

First Capital Connect (FCC) will introduce its first 50% longer trains between Brighton and Bedford from December next year.

One train will run in the morning from Brighton and one in the evening, which FCC say will provide more than 500 extra seats on the daily rush hour. The news comes after new figures revealed overcrowding on some of Sussex’s busiest lines is getting worse.

Overcrowding on First Group trains – the company that runs the Thameslink First Capital Connect service – fell sharply between 2008 and 2009.

However FCC bosses admit the Brighton to Bedford line is still one of the most overcrowded in the country.
