The controversial copper roof of a new £17 million swimming pool is likely to be approved despite an outcry from critics.
Worthing Borough Council officers said the feature would help turn the complex into a distinctive seafront landmark which would attract visitors to the town.
But opponents claim the "iconic" roof for the main 25m pool is an expensive luxury the town can ill-afford during the current economic climate.
The council's planning committee meets on Thursday to debate the application for the pool, which would replace the "tired" 1960s Aquarena.
The complex has been earmarked for the filled-in boating pool site and the children's paddling pool next to the existing Brighton Road centre.
Facilities would include a cafe, six lane competition pool, diving/learner pool, outdoor waters, a health and fitness suite, studio space and 72 car spaces.
