A winter wonderland in the shadow of the Royal Pavilion – creating up to 150 temporary jobs - has been given the go-ahead.

Bosses behind Ice Rink Pavilion yesterday (Weds) received planning permission for the venture on the Old Steine side of the Pavilion.

They are now pushing ahead with plans to ensure the temporary rink opens next month.

Brighton and Hove City Council’s planning committee voted unanimously in favour of the application at a meeting yesterday.

The proposal was almost identical to a scheme which was approved by the panel last year.

The 700sq m rink will then be open to members of the public from November 13 to January 16 between 10am and 10.30pm The rink will accommodate up to 200 skaters per session and cost up to £11 for adults.

It will be the only one in the country with its own pre-school crèche, rinkside restaurant and bar for 220 people, beginners’ area and skate aids especially for youngsters.

Brighton-based restaurant Due South has been granted a licence to sell food and alcohol between 8am and midnight.

Concerns raised by English Heritage about the view of the Royal Pavilion being obscured by the rink were appeased with the creation of a viewing balcony.
