A family will pay tribute to a talented academic killed in a road accident by unveiling a sculpture by one of her favourite artists.

Sasha Roberts, a university lecturer, died after a Belgian lorry driver fell asleep at the wheel and ploughed into her vehicle on a motorway in Kent.

Dr Roberts, 40, had her four-year-old son Lio, 8, in the car at the time. He was left with brain damage and in a two-week coma after the incident on September 7, 2006.

Husband Martin Spinelli, 43, said that after the ordeal of losing his wife and watching his son go through “heart-breaking pain” the unveiling of a work of art by her favourite Italian sculptor, Franco Fiabane, will be “an uplifting chapter in an ongoing saga”.

Mr Spinelli, of Kingston, Lewes, went to Italy to find Mr Fiabane after remembering how much his wife loved his works.

The sculpture is a large oak panel depicting a family and will be unveiled at St Pancras Church in High Street, Lewes, where Sasha often went, at 4.30pm on Saturday.
