Controversial plans for a new £17 million swimming pool have been approved after a fiery debate.
But the scheme must go through a series of further Worthing Borough Council meetings before the first brick is laid.
Councillor John Livermore, chairman of the council's planning committee, clashed repeatedly with people in the public gallery who were deemed to have interrupted proceedings.
Several were warned they could be ejected if they continued to disrupt the meeting.
Most councillors backed claims that the 25m pool in Brighton Road would be a distinctive seafront landmark which would attract visitors to the town.
But members of the public shouted out that the town could not afford a £17 million replacement for the ageing 1960s Aquarena.
The council wants to build the new complex, partly covered by a copper roof, next to the existing pool.
Facilities would include a six lane competition pool, diving/learner pool, café, outdoor waters, a health and fitness suite, studio space, and about 125 car spaces.
