I hesitate to endorse the idea that society is “letting men down” (Letters, October 13). We men are part of society, and we share the responsibility for the way it operates. That said, I do believe that we need to question the ways the world we live in is, as Warren Farrell describes it, bisexist.

In some ways, women are at a disadvantage. In other ways, men are. Yet we rarely recognise men as a group requiring attention, let alone address male needs. I believe the time has come to remedy this state of affairs.

We need to recognise the root causes of male educational struggles, male health outcomes, even (unpalatable though this may appear) male criminality and violence. Only then can we move from a culture in which we scold and punish men and boys to one in which we value and celebrate the virtues of masculinity.

We owe it to ourselves – and to the women in our lives.
