As I opened the curtains this morning at 7.30am, the first thing I set eyes on was a civil enforcement officer on a moped, ticketing a car parked overnight on the extensive double yellow lines around the junction opposite.

We do not live in an area with Parking bays, and overnight parking has become more difficult as restrictions have been pushed out towards us. So why are these “officers” sneaking around here so early in the morning when there is no traffic in the road? Why are they never around later in the day when Boundary Road is in chaos due to illegal parking, with vehicles even parked on pedestrian crossing zigzags?

I can only assume that the attitude of management is to have a policy which supports profiteering ahead of Brighton & Hove City Council’s policy objectives of keeping the traffic moving safely. This approach appears to contradict statements made in the published Parking Annual Report 2008–2009 advocating “fair enforcement of the law.” Surely this cynical and soft- targeting approach is one of the reasons that traffic wardens are so despised?
